Prague Mayor Jan Kasl of ODS surprised members of the American Chamber of Commerce yesterday by admitting that he hasn't had success in eliminating corruption at city hall. Mayors in the CR, he said, have little power to pick their deputies and other key officials, and without this power cities won't be managed efficiently. He said regional commissioners are finding that the same applies on their level. Many clerks in Prague, he explained, are creating obstacles for investors instead of offering solutions. He apologized for the bribery and other problems. He added that he might not run for reelection in Nov. because he lacks support within ODS. The new generation of politicians isn't strong enough to make changes on the local level, he said. Nothing will change at city hall, he concluded, without improving the climate on the national level.
