Within ČSSD, says Týden magazine, the word is that Miloš Zeman plans to announce his candidacy for President. Zeman has said repeatedly that he intends to step down as ČSSD chairman in April and retire to his cottage after his cabinet leaves office. Several people, including Václav Klaus, have publicly questioned this and say Zeman might secretly have alternate plans. Other people say Zeman would be smart to get out of politics completely before his party suffers a humiliating defeat in 2002. ČSSD doesn't have a clear presidential candidate so far, and Vice Chair Jitka Kupčová of the party says she hasn't heard that Zeman wants the job. In retrospect, though, some of Zeman's recent criticism of Václav Havel - esp. regarding Czech TV - could indeed be seen as a first step toward the presidency.
