One of the scandals plaguing the Czech government at the end of last week was the refusal of Defense Min. Jaromír Zůna (SPD) to allow Army Chief of Staff Miroslav Hlaváč to attend the YES security conference in Kyiv over the weekend. MP Josef Flek of STAN, who heads the defense committee of the lower chamber of Parliament, said that not sending Hlaváč was "another stupid decision of the cabinet and the defense minister." Yet if Hlaváč had indeed attended the event, there's a good chance he'd have been on one of the trains put at risk near the Ukrainian-Polish border yesterday by Russian drones. The question would then be whether proper security procedures had been followed. The same question will now be posed with regard to the trade delegation planned by Industry Min. Karel Havlíček in Oct. There's a war in Ukraine, and at some point it simply becomes "stupid," to use Flek's term, to send the country's top officials into the line of fire.
