After the cabinet meeting on July 27, PM Andrej Babiš said that the trip to China the week before by Speaker of the House Tomio Okamura’s had been successful and that it had become clear that Beijing was interested in restoring relations to where they were before. He and Vice PM Karel Havlíček had more or less agreed, Babiš said, that they would travel together to China on an official visit sometime next spring. Then one day after Babiš met at the cabinet office in Prague on Sept. 18 with U.S. Amb. to Nato Matthew Whitaker, Babiš told CNN Prima News at the Nato Days event in Ostrava that his government wasn't drafting a timeline for meeting the 5% Nato commitment. After U.S. Pres. Donald Trump announced his diesel deal with Russian Pres. Vladimir Putin, Babiš said that it was shocking and that Trump was pulling a dirty trick on Europe. In each of these three cases, Babiš was showing defiance to Trump and his policies. In Parliament on July 2, 2026, Babiš said that his government has a sovereign foreign policy and doesn't go anywhere for instructions the way the Fiala government went to Brussels. The U.S. has no right to lecture us, Babiš said. Almost as though he knew that Trump would soon be a lame duck.
