KDU-ČSL Chair Jan Grolich, one of the big winners in the elections this past weekend, apparently plans to split his time over the next three years between Brno, where he's governor of the Southern Moravian region, and Prague, where he was just elected to the Senate. Defeating Andrej Babiš in the parliamentary elections in 2029 is the ultimate goal, and the Senate is supposed to be a springboard to this. STAN Chair Vít Rakušan has the same goal, though, and he also seems to have more killer instinct, which the leader of the opposition certainly needs. Unless Grolich wants to be remembered as no more than a one-hit wonder with a successful campaign song, he needs to set his sights higher. Claiming the position of president of the Senate would be bold and maybe even impertinent for a first-term senator, but if he were successful in negotiating it with the other opposition parties, his life would change. It would keep him in the national spotlight and give him an edge over Rakušan. Grolich would of course have to walk over Miloš Vystrčil of ODS, but let's face it, he's of no use to anyone in defeating Babiš anyway.
