ANO is coming under attack before tomorrow's elections for promising lower mortgage rates during last year's campaign, and Finance Min. Alena Schillerová of the party responded yesterday by threatening on X to take action against the commercial banks. "It would be a pity to reopen a debate that we had already considered closed," she wrote, undoubtedly meaning the debate about a sector tax on banks. Such a tax would be in line with what she and PM Andrej Babiš have been saying for weeks about the rising interest rates. Yet just 10 hours later yesterday, Schillerová announced plans on TV Nova to increase the tax deduction for mortgage interest, which would instead benefit the banks (as well as their customers). What happened in those 10 hours is impossible to say, but Agrofert's latest annual report shows that Babiš's "former" company had Kč 44.3bn in bank and other loans as of the end of last year, of which 60% was from the banking groups Schillerová was indirectly threatening in her tweet (Komerční/SG, ČS/Erste, Raiffeisen, ČSOB/KBC, Moneta). In the grand scheme of things, Babiš's potential banking conflict of interest could be bigger than his agricultural one.
